Issued in the UK on 26 April 1974 on Magnet Records (catalogue MAG 8), “Red Dress” was Alvin Stardust’s breakthrough glam-rock single that propelled him into the Top 10.

Following his transformation from Shane Fenton into the leather-clad, quiffed Alvin Stardust persona, “Red Dress” was released as his second single for the newly formed Magnet label. Produced and written by Peter Shelley, the track delivered a catchy, stomping glam sound with a strong visual identity that perfectly matched Stardust’s larger-than-life stage image.

The UK 7" single paired “Red Dress” (2:52) with the B-side “Little Darlin’” (2:55). First pressings featured a white label with red text, while later pressings used red labels with black text. The single entered the UK Singles Chart on 4 May 1974 and climbed to a peak position of No. 7, spending 8 weeks on the chart.

This release marked Alvin Stardust’s arrival as a major glam act of the mid-1970s, capitalising on the era’s love of theatrical, riff-driven pop-rock.
