A late-era glam-rock single from Mud marking their first release on RCA Victor after leaving RAK. Released as the band shifted toward a more mature, folk-tinged sound, âSlow Talking Boyâ showcased a departure from their earlier bubblegum hits while retaining Les Grayâs distinctive vocals.
Issued in the UK on 29 April 1977, the single was taken from the album Rock On.
đ The Story
Following a string of major successes with Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman on RAK Records, Mud signed to RCA Victor in 1977. âSlow Talking Boyâ was their debut single for the new label â a folk-rock flavored track written by John Kongos and Peter Leroy. Produced by Pip Williams (known for his work with Status Quo), it featured Rob Davis on a Vox 12-string guitar-mandolin, giving the record a distinctive texture.
The band performed the song on BBC TVâs Top of the Pops, but it failed to chart in the UK, signaling the end of their mainstream singles run. It appeared on the album Rock On, which introduced a broader, more eclectic sound compared to their earlier glam-pop hits.
