Overview

Released on 21 January 1972, “Telegram Sam” launched the new T. Rex Wax Co. label in partnership with EMI, inaugurating the MARC/T. REX catalogue sequence with catalogue number T. REX 1. Arriving at the height of T. Rextasy, the single became T. Rex’s third UK No.1, following “Hot Love” and “Get It On,” and confirmed Bolan’s absolute dominance of early‑1970s British pop.


The single entered the UK charts on 29 January 1972, rising immediately to No.1, where it remained for two weeks

The release was unusual for its time: a three‑track 7-inch, pairing the A‑side with “Cadilac” and “Baby Strange”, both later included on The Slider reissues. ("Cadillac" was, at the time, a non-album track)This triple‑cut format gave exceptional value and reinforced Bolan’s confidence in the strength of his material.

Recorded in December 1971 during the early Slider sessions, “Telegram Sam” blends glam‑boogie swagger with Bolan’s signature character‑driven lyricism — “Jungle Face Jake,” “Golden Nose Slim,” and the titular Sam — creating a miniature cast of glitter‑era archetypes.
