In spring 1977, Bryan Ferry was riding high on the success of his first fully original solo album In Your Mind, delivering a sleek, cinematic glam-pop single that blended his signature sophistication with a touch of exotic intrigue. “Tokyo Joe” captured Ferry at his most stylish — a suave ode to femme-fatale cinema glamour amid the fading embers of the glam era.

Issued in the UK on 29 April 1977, the single became Ferry’s eleventh solo release and the second taken from In Your Mind.

🔘 The Story

Following the eclectic covers album Let’s Stick Together, Bryan Ferry fully embraced original songwriting for In Your Mind. “Tokyo Joe” was inspired by Ferry’s lifelong fascination with classic Hollywood cinema, specifically evoking the exotic, dangerous allure of femme-fatales like “Shanghai Lil” from the 1932 film Shanghai Express.

Produced by Ferry himself with Steve Nye, the track featured a tight new lineup of musicians and a polished, groove-heavy arrangement that mixed orchestral flourishes with driving pop-rock energy. The B-side was a faithful cover of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home,” originally recorded for the 1976 All This and World War II tribute album.

The single entered the UK chart in mid-May and climbed to a respectable No. 15, spending seven weeks on the chart — a solid performance that underscored Ferry’s enduring solo appeal even as Roxy Music were on hiatus.
