Tyrannosaurus Rex was the original name of the band that would later become the glam rock giants T. Rex. Formed in London in 1967 by Marc Bolan, they started as a mystical, acoustic duo creating a unique style of psychedelic folk — whimsical, poetic, and otherworldly. With Bolan’s distinctive voice, poetic lyrics about elves, wizards, and cosmic love, and a raw, intimate sound featuring acoustic guitar and bongos, they became darlings of the UK underground scene.

THE TRANSITION

By 1970, Bolan shortened the band name to T. Rex, plugged in his guitar, and fully embraced glam rock. The mystical folk era of Tyrannosaurus Rex laid the lyrical and stylistic foundation for the massive success that followed with hits like "Get It On" and "Hot Love."

LEGACY

Tyrannosaurus Rex represented the height of late-1960s British hippie/psychedelic whimsy. Their gentle, fairy-tale folk sound contrasted sharply with the electric boogie that made them superstars. Marc Bolan’s poetic imagination and Steve Took’s percussive flair created something truly unique — a bridge between the 60s underground and the glittering 70s.

WHY TYRANNOSAURUS REX MATTERS

They were Bolan’s magical first chapter: intimate, strange, and enchanting. Without the folk-mystic period, the explosive glam explosion of T. Rex might never have happened. A beautiful, dreamy prelude to one of rock’s greatest reinventions.

CAREER STORY

Bolan started as a hippie folk artist with Tyrannosaurus Rex. In 1970, he shortened the name, electrified the sound, and embraced glitter, satin, and platform boots. The T. Rex boom ("T. Rextasy") in 1971–72 made him a superstar in the UK, rivaling The Beatles in popularity among teens. His poetic, playful lyrics about cars, girls, and cosmic boogie, combined with a killer groove, created pure pop magic. Bolan tragically died in a car crash in 1977 at age 29

LEGACY

T. Rex essentially invented glam rock and heavily influenced David Bowie, Roxy Music, Queen, Sex Pistols, and countless others. Marc Bolan’s look, sound, and charisma made him one of rock’s greatest style icons. Their music remains incredibly fun, sexy, and timeless.

WHY T. REX MATTERS

They brought magic, mystery, and pure rock ‘n’ roll swagger to the charts. No band has ever made boogie sound quite so glamorous. Marc Bolan remains the ultimate electric warrior and the high priest of glam.
