You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic – Album: Mar. 1979

Released: March 27, 1979 (UK)

Catalogue Number: CHR 1214 (Chrysalis UK LP)

Ian Hunter’s sharpest, most fully realised solo statement — powered by the E Street Band.

🔘 Overview

Released in March 1979, You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic marked a creative peak for Ian Hunter, pairing his songwriting with the muscle and finesse of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Recorded at The Power Station in New York, the album fused Hunter’s literate, sardonic lyricism with a polished, radio‑ready rock sound.

The title — famously spotted by Mick Ronson on a toilet wall — became the catalyst for the album’s identity. Hunter loved it so much he offered Ronson co‑writing credit on the lead single “Just Another Night” in exchange for the title. The album became one of Hunter’s biggest sellers, spawning charting singles and later producing two of the most enduring songs of his career: “Cleveland Rocks” and “Ships.”

The record’s legacy only grew over time. “Cleveland Rocks” became a pop‑culture staple via The Drew Carey Show, while Barry Manilow’s cover of “Ships” became a US Top 10 hit. A 30th‑anniversary reissue in 2009 further cemented the album’s status as Hunter’s masterpiece.
