The Legendary Last Ziggy Show – 50th Anniversary Release
Released August 11, 2023 by Parlophone Records (catalogue DBZSM50), Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture marked the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s iconic final performance as Ziggy Stardust on July 3, 1973, at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.
Filmed by renowned documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, Don’t Look Back, Depeche Mode - 101), the show captured Bowie and The Spiders From Mars backstage and onstage in what became the most famous retirement moment in rock history. The film remained largely unseen for over a decade, but for the 50th anniversary it was fully digitally restored under Frazer Pennebaker (D.A.’s son), with the audio newly remastered.

Key restorations include the reinstatement of the “The Jean Genie / Love Me Do” medley and “Round And Round” featuring the late Jeff Beck — both performances newly mixed by longtime collaborator Tony Visconti, with “Round And Round” making its very first official appearance anywhere.
The show famously ended with Bowie’s farewell speech just before the final encore “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” — the shocking announcement that he was
retiring the Ziggy Stardust persona, surprising everyone in attendance (including the band). The first proclamation of its kind in rock and roll.
