FERRY'S FASHIONS DURING THE ROXY YEARS

Roxy Music is back in the States with a new album and a new tour this October-November. For fans of the group, there is no question that their sound will have developed along the uniquely experimental lines Roxy has pursued since their very first album released four years ago. Their stage act will be dramatic, with slick lighting effects and superb instrumental solos.

1 At the start, it was slicked back hair, dramatic eye makeup, and flashy leopard skin outfits for the bizarre Bryan. This-circa 1971.

Bryan didn't wear platform boots for very long, but when he did, they were the best-custom made, and totally color co-ordinated to go with his spe-cially designed glitter ensembles. Circa 1972.

Things started to tone down a bit by 1973, and Bryan became the rock Sinatra with smartly tailored tuxedos and bow ties. He also showed up at certain concerts wearing gaucho out-fits and Hitler youth regalia, but we'll let him forget those.

But one question remains to be answered: What will lead singer and Roxy founder Bryan Ferry wear? For the past few years now, Bryan has been at the forefront of rock fashion, leading the way with startling new styles. Many have attempted to copy the "Bryan Ferry Look", few have succeeded. Rock Scene (all of us Ferry fans from the very beginning!) gives a sampling of some of the changes Bryan's gone through onstage-and off- during the past few tours. Can you guess what's next???

The offstage Bryan. Here, shown at a Hollywood party with the glamorous Cindy Lang. Bryan relaxes in a blue serge suit, white shirt, and striped silk tie. (During the 1974 holi-day season.) Mighty conservative, but again, way ahead of the times. Following this photo, we were at par-ties where the likes of Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, and even the members of Uriah Heep all turned up in what had once been considered businessman's drag. Leave it to Bryan to always be on top of fashion. (Photo by Neal Preston/Andy Kent)

We managed to sneak this shot of Bryan while he was on a holiday (1974) cruise. Notice the smart black overcoat-very Russian influenced, with the polka dotted silk muffler tie nonchalantly around his throat. You can't see his hands, but they're cov-ered with the very best gray antelope gloves from France. (Photo by Pennie Smith.)

Most folks get down in denims for a walk through the wood, but Bryan, ever conscious of his fashion image and responsibility, was perfectly turned out in tan gabardine slacks, tailored pale cream coloured shirt, striped silk tie, and custom made jacket from Blades, in London. This is the most recent photo we have of Mr. Ferry, taken in 1975, and we look for-ward to what he will look like when he gets back to the U.S. Can you wait??? (Photo by Pennie Smith.)
