7" Vinyl, 45 RPM — DJM Records (DJS.652)
Released: March 12, 1976 (UK)
Elton John’s thunderous, piano‑driven reimagining of The Who’s rock‑opera classic, immortalised through Tommy.
🔘 Overview
Released on March 12, 1976, Elton John’s Pinball Wizard arrived as a UK single drawn from Ken Russell’s 1975 film adaptation of Tommy. Although recorded and issued as a promo‑only US single in 1975, this UK release marked the track’s first commercial availability — and its rise into the charts.
Unlike most of the Tommy soundtrack, which featured combinations of The Who and top session players, Elton recorded the track with his own touring band under producer Gus Dudgeon, giving the performance a distinctly Elton identity. The arrangement replaces Pete Townshend’s acoustic guitar with Elton’s percussive piano attack, adds new lyrics written by Townshend for the film, and includes a subtle nod to “I Can’t Explain.”
The film sequence became iconic: Elton, towering in giant platform boots, battling Tommy on a hybrid piano‑pinball machine. Upon release, the single climbed to No. 7 on the UK charts — the only cover of a Who song ever to reach the UK Top 10.
The track later became a live staple, appearing in Elton’s 1975 Wembley Stadium performance, his Red Piano Las Vegas residency, and his 2023 Glastonbury finale.
