A bright, melodic burst of Roy Wood’s technicolour glam‑pop, Rock ’N’ Roll Winter arrived as Wizzard’s first single for Warner Bros., marking a new chapter for the band after their Harvest era. Released in the spring of 1974, the track carried Wood’s trademark humour, orchestral flair, and a warm dedication to Lynsey de Paul.

Issued in the UK on 19 April 1974, the single became one of Wizzard’s strongest chart performers of the decade.

🔘 The Story

Following a period of inactivity in early 1974 due to Roy Wood’s health, Wizzard transitioned from Harvest to Warner Bros. Records. Their first release for the label, Rock ’N’ Roll Winter, was originally scheduled for early 1974, then pushed to 29 March, before finally arriving on 19 April.

The song’s subtitle — (Sorry, The Word Spring Wouldn’t Fit) — appeared directly beneath the title on the label in matching font, reflecting Wood’s playful, self‑referential humour. The track was dedicated to Wood’s partner Lynsey de Paul, whose nickname “Loony” appears in the credits alongside “The Bleach Boys” and “The Suedettes.”

Despite delays, the single performed strongly, reaching No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart and charting in Ireland and Germany. Its warm, orchestral glam sound made it a seasonal favourite and a standout in Wizzard’s catalogue.
