A highâvoltage glamârock classic, âThe Ballroom Blitzâ captured The Sweet at their most explosive â a thunderous fusion of powerâpop hooks, razorâsharp riffs, and theatrical swagger that became one of the defining anthems of the glam era.
Released on September 14, 1973, the single arrived as the bandâs next major Chinnichapâpenned hit following âHell Raiser.â Issued by RCA Victor under catalogue number RCA 2403, the track delivered a ferocious, adrenalineâcharged performance inspired by a realâlife stage attack on the band in 1973. Backed with âRock & Roll Disgrace,â the release showcased both the polished Chinnichap sound and the bandâs own harderâedged writing. Entering the UK Singles Chart in midâSeptember, it surged to No. 2 and became one of Sweetâs most iconic hits.

đ The Story
By late 1973, The Sweet were at the peak of their glamârock powers. âThe Ballroom Blitzâ distilled everything that made them electrifying: pounding drums, stacked harmonies, and a riff that detonated like a glamârock firecracker.
Inspired by a violent incident at a Scottish gig earlier that year, the songâs chaotic energy and theatrical flair resonated instantly with fans. Phil Wainmanâs production sharpened the Chinnichap formula to its most explosive point, while the bandâs performance pushed it into overdrive.
The Bâside, âRock & Roll Disgrace,â offered a grittier, selfâpenned counterpoint, showcasing the bandâs growing confidence as writers beyond the Chinnichap machine.
Commercially, the single was a smash. Entering the UK charts in midâSeptember, it held strong at No. 2 for three consecutive weeks and remained in the Top 40 for nine weeks.
