The Sweet (often known simply as Sweet) were a British glam rock band formed in 1968 in London. Known for their infectious hooks, towering harmonies, powerful riffs, and flamboyant stage image, they became one of the most successful and recognisable acts of the early 1970s glam rock explosion. With their glittery costumes, platform boots, and sing-along anthems, The Sweet perfectly embodied the fun, colourful spirit of the era.

EARLY YEARS & RISE TO FAME

Originally a straightforward pop band called The Sweetshop, they shortened their name to The Sweet and signed with RCA Records. The classic line-up consisted of:

  • Brian Connolly – lead vocals

  • Steve Priest – bass, backing vocals

  • Mick Tucker – drums, backing vocals

  • Andy Scott – guitar, backing vocals

Their early singles were produced by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman (Chinnichap), who crafted a string of massive hits that blended bubblegum pop with hard rock riffs.

GLAM ROCK ANTHEMS (1971–1975)

The Sweet exploded onto the charts with a series of iconic singles, including:

  • “Funny Funny” (1971)

  • “Co-Co” (1971)

  • “Poppa Joe” (1972)

  • “Little Willy” (1972)

  • “Wig-Wam Bam” (1972)

  • “Block Buster!” (1973) – UK No. 1

  • “Hell Raiser” (1973)

  • “The Ballroom Blitz” (1973)

  • “Teenage Rampage” (1974)

  • “Fox on the Run” (1975)

Their hits combined catchy melodies, driving guitars, and powerful vocal harmonies with a rebellious, party-ready attitude. Albums such as Sweet (1973) and Desolation Boulevard (1974) showcased both their commercial pop side and their heavier rock ambitions.

LATER YEARS

After creative tensions and the departure of Brian Connolly in 1978, the remaining members continued as a trio. They enjoyed further success with tracks like “Love Is Like Oxygen” (1978). The band eventually split in the 1980s, but various line-ups (including one featuring original members) have continued touring over the decades.

LEGACY

The Sweet are one of the quintessential glam rock bands. Their high-energy anthems, theatrical performances, and larger-than-life image helped define the genre. Songs like “Ballroom Blitz” and “Fox on the Run” remain staples of rock radio and are still instantly recognisable decades later. They influenced countless artists in glam, hard rock, and power pop.

WHY THE SWEET MATTERS

They brought pure fun, energy, and attitude to glam rock. While some glam acts leaned into art and androgyny, The Sweet celebrated loud guitars, big choruses, and unapologetic entertainment. Their music continues to get crowds singing and stomping along to this day.
