THE STORY

“Little Willy” was the breakthrough glam rock hit for The Sweet, marking their shift from pure bubblegum pop toward a tougher, rock-edged sound while still retaining catchy hooks. Written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and produced by Phil Wainman, the single became a major success in the UK and an even bigger hit in the United States.

CONTEXT & NOTES

Released as the band was transitioning from session-musician-backed recordings to greater creative involvement, “Little Willy” was the last A-side to feature only session players on instruments. The risqué double-entendre lyrics nearly caused issues with the BBC, but the song became a glam classic. It peaked at No. 4 in the UK and reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.
