T.Rex: Songwriter: 1973 (1LP) Release Date: May 26, 2023 “Songwriter: 1973” takes in a period of change during which Bolan was very active in recording studios in the US and Europe. Now, in 1973, with a pack of dressed-up disciples breathing down his neck and critics eager to knock his success, the budding anti-star wanted out”. With a selection of finished recordings and working versions, this 16-track compilation charts Bolan’s attempts to move away from and develop the sound he had invented. This release has been compiled and fully annotated in a 1800-word note by Mark Paytress, author of the definitive biography “Marc Bolan: The Rise And Fall of a 20th Century Superstar”, and the recently-published “Glam! • Cyrinda Foxe

Cyrinda Foxe American actress, model, and publicist who became a notable figure in the rock 'n' roll scene of the 1970s and 1980s. February 22, 1952. Born Kathleen Victoria Hetzekian on February 22, 1952, in Santa Monica, California, she grew up in what she described as an abusive household. Of Armenian descent, she left home before finishing high school, briefly lived in Texas, and then settled in New York City, where she reinvented herself as Cyrinda Foxe—a name inspired by a 1960s cocktail dress label. In New York, Foxe immersed herself in the vibrant nightlife, particularly at Max’s Kansas City, a legendary hangout for artists, musicians, and cultural icons. Her striking looks—often compared to Marilyn Monroe due to her platinum blonde hair and bold red lipstick—caught the attention of influential figures. She worked as a publicist for MainMan, David Bowie’s management company, and began a relationship with Bowie in 1972. This connection led to her appearance in the music video for his song “The Jean Genie,” which he reportedly wrote with her in mind. Foxe later spoke fondly of Bowie, calling him a "great lover" and cherishing their time together. Foxe’s personal life was as colorful as her career. In 1977, she married David Johansen, the frontman of the proto-punk band New York Dolls, but the marriage lasted less than a year. While still married, she met Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, left Johansen, and married Tyler in 1978. The couple had a daughter, Mia Tyler, born in 1978, who later became a successful plus-size model and actress. Foxe and Tyler’s marriage was tumultuous, marked by drug addiction, infidelity, and abuse, and they divorced in 1987, just before Aerosmith’s major comeback. As an actress, Foxe is best known for her role in Andy Warhol’s 1977 film *Bad*, which cemented her status as a figure in the underground art and music scenes. She also appeared in Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” video and had minor roles in other projects. In 1997, she published a memoir, *Dream On: Livin’ on the Edge with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith*, co-written with Danny Fields. The book stirred controversy when Foxe announced plans to include nude photos of Tyler in the paperback edition, prompting a successful lawsuit from Tyler in 1999 to block their release. She later attempted to sell the photos on a website, which shut down by 2000. Foxe’s later years were challenging. In 2001, she suffered a mild stroke that left her partially paralyzed, and she struggled financially, relying on Medicaid and food stamps. A benefit concert at CBGB, organized by Myra Friedman, raised funds for her, with contributions from Tyler (who also paid her hospital bills) and Bowie. In August 2002, she married musician Keith Waa at the Gramercy Park Hotel, where Tyler had secured her a room. Tragically, Foxe died just days later, on September 7, 2002, at age 50, from an inoperable brain tumor. Cyrinda Foxe left a lasting mark as a muse and personality in the glam and punk rock worlds. Her bold style, magnetic presence, and connections to rock legends like Bowie, Johansen, and Tyler made her a symbol of the era’s wild, rebellious spirit.

Rex’s glam rock pinnacle, with hits like “Telegram Sam” and “20th Century Boy” influencing punk and indie acts. • Remembering Alvin Stardust: A Glam Rock Legend Lost Too Soon

Posted on October 23, 2025 – Marking 11 Years Since His Passing Today, as the calendar flips to October 23, it's impossible not to pause and reflect on one of the true icons of British glam rock: Alvin Stardust. It's been exactly 11 years since we lost him on this very day in 2014, at the age of 72, following a brave battle with prostate cancer. For those of us who grew up with his leather-clad swagger and infectious hooks, his absence still feels raw. Alvin wasn't just a musician; he was a showman, a chameleon of the stage, and a reminder of rock 'n' roll's rebellious heart. Born Bernard William Jewry on September 27, 1942, in London (though he spent his early years in Mansfield), Alvin's journey to stardom was anything but straightforward. As a schoolboy, he picked up the guitar and dove headfirst into the skiffle craze sweeping Britain. By his teens, he was fronting a band that would become the Fentones, recording under the name Shane Fenton. In the pre-Beatles haze of the early 1960s, they notched up four UK Top 40 hits, including "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone" and "It's Gonna Happen Tonight." It was innocent pop with a rockabilly edge – think Cliff Richard meets Gene Vincent – and it laid the groundwork for a career that would evolve dramatically. But fame's spotlight can flicker. After the Fentones disbanded, Bernard stepped away from the mic, dipping into music management and small gigs alongside his first wife, Iris Caldwell (sister of Rory Storm of the Hurricanes). The 1970s, however, brought reinvention. Spotting the glam rock explosion ignited by Marc Bolan & David Bowie, Bernard – with the help of Magnet Records co-founder Peter Shelley – transformed into Alvin Stardust. The name was a playful nod to Bowie's alter ego, originally considered "Elvin" as a mashup of Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent. Dressed in black leather, sporting a towering quiff, mutton chops, and a single glittering glove, Alvin became the brooding anti-hero of glam. No glitter bombs here – just raw attitude and a finger pointed straight at the camera. His breakthrough came with "My Coo Ca Choo" in 1973, a stomping novelty track that raced to No. 2 on the UK charts. It was followed by a string of Top 10 smashes: "Jealous Mind" (his one and only No. 1 in 1974), "You You You". Alvin's music was pure escapism – sassy, seductive, and unapologetically fun. Lines like "Lay down and groove on the mat" from "My Coo Ca Choo" captured the era's hedonistic vibe, while his stage presence turned every performance into a spectacle. The 1980s saw Alvin pivot again, trading glam grit for polished pop. Producer Pete Waterman handed him a cover of Nat King Cole's "Pretend," which hit No. 4 in 1983, and Mike Batt penned the nostalgic "I Feel Like Buddy Holly," peaking at No. 5 the following year. These tracks showcased his versatile voice – gravelly one moment, crooning the next. Beyond records, Alvin shone in musical theater, starring in Godspell, Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar, and Chicago. He even popped up on TV as the landlord in Hollyoaks, proving his charisma transcended genres. A devoted Christian later in life, he channeled his faith into quiet philanthropy, but never lost his cheeky humor. When news of his death broke on October 23, 2014, tributes poured in. Liza Goddard tweeted a heartfelt "RIP Alvin Stardust," while Hollyoaks co-star Jeremy Edwards remembered him as "a great bloke." He'd just wrapped his first album in 30 years, Alvin, set for release days later – a poignant "new and exciting departure" he was immensely proud of. His final show at the Regal Cinema in Evesham was just six days prior, a testament to his unyielding spirit despite the cancer that had metastasized 18 months earlier. Eleven years on, Alvin Stardust's legacy endures in the grooves of vinyl collections and the playlists of nostalgia seekers. He reminded us that reinvention isn't just possible – it's essential. In a world that often plays it safe, Alvin dared to point, strut, and sing with unfiltered joy. So crank up "Jealous Mind" today, tip your hat to the quiff, and groove on the mat. The rock gods are groovier for having him. What’s your favorite Alvin Stardust memory? Drop it in the comments below – let's keep the conversation alive.

  • Trevor Bolder

Is best known for his long association with Uriah Heep and his tenure with the Spiders from Mars, the backing band for David Bowie, although he also played alongside a variety of musicians from the early 1970s. Passed May 21, 2013, Bolder was born in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. His father was a trumpet player, and other members of his family too were musicians. He played cornet in the school band and was active in his local R&B scene in the mid-1960s. Inspired by the Beatles, in 1964 he formed his first band with his brother and took up the bass guitar. He first came to prominence in the Rats, which also featured fellow Hull musician Mick Ronson on lead guitar. In 1971, Bolder was called in to replace Tony Visconti in David Bowie's backing band, which would soon be known as the Spiders from Mars; he subsequently appeared in D. A. Pennebaker's 1973 documentary and concert movie Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He is name-checked as "Weird" (Bowie's stage nickname for Bolder) in the song "Ziggy Stardust," in the lyrics "Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly, and the Spiders from Mars." Bolder "never looked comfortable as a glam-rock mannequin, tottering behind Ziggy Stardust in platform boots and a rainbow-hued outfit of latex and glitter." Bolder's bass (and occasional trumpet) work appeared on the studio albums Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973), and Pin Ups (1973), the Spiders' swan song with their leader. He went on to play on Mick Ronson's 1974 album Slaughter on 10th Avenue, which made the British Top Ten. Bolder playing a Fender Precision Bass signature bass guitar in 2006 In 1976, Bolder joined Uriah Heep, replacing John Wetton. He worked on the albums Firefly, Innocent Victim, Fallen Angel, and Conquest; when the line-up that had recorded the latter disbanded, he alone remained, along with Mick Box, guitarist, founder member, and legal owner of the band's name. The attempt to put a new line-up together temporarily stalled; and Bolder, needing to earn a living, accepted an offer in 1981 to join Wishbone Ash. Bolder had, coincidentally, again swapped places with John Wetton, becoming Wishbone Ash's bass player for their 1982 album Twin Barrels Burning. It was another short-lived connection, as by 1983 he returned to the rhythm section with Uriah Heep, playing on the Head First tour (although Bob Daisley played on the album) and all subsequent studio albums up to and including Into the Wild. As well as his usual bass-playing and backing-vocal duties, Bolder produced Heep's 1991 album Different World. In 2012 and early 2013, Bolder worked with Stevie ZeSuicide (Steve Roberts of the band U.K. Subs) as producer on singles "Wild Trash" (co-writer with ZeSuicide), "Lady Rocker," and a cover of "Ziggy Stardust." Bolder also played on these tracks. Bolder died in May 2013 at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham from cancer, aged 62. He had undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer earlier that year. courtesy Wikipedia

  • Iggy Pop: "Corruption" Single (1999)

In 1999, Iggy Pop released a fiery slice of alternative rock with his "Corruption" / "Hollywood Affair" (featuring Johnny Depp) 7-inch red vinyl single, released in the UK on Virgin Records (catalog: VUS 155). This limited-edition gem, tied to Pop’s introspective Avenue B album, blends gritty riffs with biting commentary on fame and decay. The A-side’s raw energy and the B-side’s quirky Depp collaboration make it a collector’s dream, especially since Avenue B never hit vinyl itself. Single Overview A-Side: "Corruption" (~4:00)Written by Iggy Pop. A brooding, guitar-driven rocker dissecting self-corruption and lost ideals, with Pop’s snarling vocals at their post-punk best. Its music video showcases his weathered charisma—a true "post-80s Ig" classic. B-Side: "Hollywood Affair" (feat. Johnny Depp) (2:53)Written by Iggy Pop and Johnny Depp. A non-album exclusive satirizing Hollywood excess, featuring Depp’s raw guitar work. Born from mutual admiration, this playful collab adds a unique edge, though some call it a fun but forgettable curiosity. Release Details: Label: Virgin Records (UK/Europe, cat: VUS 155, barcode: 7 24389 62437 3). Format: 7" red vinyl, 45 RPM, in a flipback sleeve, printed in the EU. Date: October 4, 1999, tied to Avenue B’s release. Context: Produced by Don Was in New York, the single reflects Pop’s shift from Stooges-era punk to reflective alt-rock, with guests like Whitey Kirst (guitar) and Lenny Castro (percussion). Production and Themes Recorded during Avenue B sessions, the tracks mix polished production with Iggy’s punk grit. "Corruption" dives into personal decay, while "Hollywood Affair" mocks Tinseltown’s glitz, with Depp’s guitar adding a raw, celebrity-fueled vibe. Published by James Osterberg Music (Pop’s real name) and others, it’s a snapshot of his '90s reinvention. Legacy and Collectibility Though it didn’t storm the charts (Avenue B scored 52/100 on Metacritic), this single is a fan favorite for its raw energy and rare format. The red vinyl, prized for its analogue warmth, fetches $20–$50+ on Discogs, with CD variants including extras like "Rock Star Grave." Stream it on Spotify or YouTube for a hit of Iggy’s enduring swagger. Why It Rocks This red vinyl single captures Iggy Pop’s punk legacy colliding with '90s experimentation. From "Corruption"’s visceral punch to Depp’s quirky riffing on "Hollywood Affair," it’s a must-have for collectors and fans of the Godfather of Punk. Hunt it down and crank it loud! • David Bowie’s ‘hours…’: The Pioneering Digital Release of September 21, 1999.

On September 21, 1999—exactly 26 years ago today—David Bowie made history by releasing his 22nd studio album, ‘hours…’ , exclusively as a digital download on BowieNet, his innovative internet service provider. This move positioned Bowie as the first major artist to offer a full album online before its physical counterpart, a bold step in the nascent digital music era that foreshadowed streaming’s dominance. The album later hit physical shelves on October 4, 1999 (UK) and October 5 (US) via Virgin Records, but the BowieNet drop was a game-changer, available for $15.99 to subscribers and select sites like VirginRecords.com . Background and Production Origins : ‘hours…’  stemmed from Bowie’s role as a virtual character (Bowie, the “New Arax” priest) in the cyberpunk video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul  (1999), developed by Quantic Dream. Bowie and longtime collaborator Reeves Gabrels (Tin Machine guitarist) composed eight original songs for the game—seven of which appear in alternate versions on the album—with Gabrels also scoring about two hours of instrumental themes. Recording : Sessions kicked off in early 1999, with demos at Looking Glass Studios in New York, followed by full production at Seaview Studios in Bermuda and Sear Sound in NYC. Produced by Bowie and Gabrels, it features a core band including Mark Plati (bass), Sterling Campbell (drums), and Gail Ann Dorsey (bass on select tracks). The sound blends art rock, electronica, and acoustic introspection, marking a shift from Bowie’s industrial 1990s experiments ( Outside , Earthling ) toward mature, reflective pop-rock. Fan Collaboration : In a BowieNet songwriting contest launched in late 1998, Ohio fan Alex Grant won the chance to co-write lyrics for “What’s Really Happening?” and provide backing vocals during a live-streamed May 24, 1999, session—Bowie’s nod to interactive fandom. BowieNet Tease : From August 6, 1999, BowieNet subscribers got 45-second snippets of each track, track-by-track descriptions, and a pixelated reveal of the album cover (a Pietà-inspired image of Bowie cradling a younger self, evoking Michelangelo’s sculpture). Tracklist and Themes The 11-track album (46:59 runtime) explores mortality, regret, redemption, and hope, drawing from the nursery rhyme “Monday’s Child” (hence the title). It’s Bowie at 52, grappling with aging amid his stable life with Iman. Standouts include the lead single “Thursday’s Child” (an optimistic opener) and the haunting “The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell.” Japanese editions added the bonus track “We All Go Through.” Thursday’s Child  (5:24) – Hopeful ballad on life’s journey. Something in the Air  (5:46) – Atmospheric rocker with electronic edges. Survive  (4:11) – Somber reflection on endurance. If I’m Dreaming My Life  (7:04) – Dreamy, piano-driven introspection. Seven  (4:04) – Uplifting acoustic track on love’s renewal. What’s Really Happening?  (4:14) – Fan-co-written, existential groove. The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell  (4:40) – Iggy Pop co-write, sardonic take on fame. New Angels of Promise  (4:37) – Epic, orchestral build. Brilliant Adventure  (3:53) – Jazzy nod to exploration. The Dreamers  (5:14) – Closing meditation on illusion vs. reality. Bring Me the Disco King  (4:02) – Later re-recorded for Blackstar ; a melancholic finale. Themes : Introspective and vulnerable, it captures “the feelings of guys my age,” per Bowie, blending optimism with existential dread—far from his glam or Berlin eras. Release and Commercial Performance Digital Debut : The September 21 BowieNet release sold ~5,000 digital copies in the first week, a modest but trailblazing figure. It was downloadable in MP3 format, predating iTunes by years. Physical Rollout : Peaked at #16 UK, #47 US Billboard 200; certified Silver in UK (60,000+ units). Singles “Thursday’s Child” (#16 UK) and “Survive” (#35 UK) got radio play but no major US traction. Formats : Initial CD/vinyl; 2005 reissue added bonuses like “We All Go Through”; 2021’s Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001)  box set includes a 5.1 surround mix. Reception Critical Response : Generally positive, with Rolling Stone  (3/5) praising its “elegant maturity” but noting uneven pacing. Q  magazine hailed it as “Bowie’s most coherent album in years.” AllMusic (4/5) called it a “return to form” for its emotional depth. Some critiqued it as too subdued post- Earthling . Fan Perspective : Beloved by Bowie completists for its intimacy; X posts today (as of 2025) often call it an “underrated gem,” especially post- Blackstar  reevaluations. The digital release is retroactively celebrated as visionary. Bowie’s View : In a 1999 New Zealand Herald  interview, he described it as a “soundtrack” approach, invigorated by the game collab. He later favored tracks like “Seven” for their simplicity. Legacy and Impact Digital Pioneer : The BowieNet drop disrupted the industry, inspiring Napster’s rise and proving artists could bypass labels for direct fan access. BowieNet itself (launched 1998, peaked at 100,000 users) offered exclusives like live album LiveAndWell.com  (1999), foreshadowing Bandcamp and Patreon. Cultural Tie-Ins : Omikron  featured Bowie’s songs in-game, with him voicing multiple characters. The album influenced his later work, like Heathen  (2002), and “Bring Me the Disco King” got a jazzier Blackstar  redux. Modern Reassessment : In 2025, it’s streamed millions on Spotify, with fans on X praising its prescience amid AI music debates—Bowie’s virtual avatar feels eerily relevant. Where to Access Streaming : Full album on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal (search “David Bowie hours”). Physical : Vinyl/CD reissues via Amazon or Discogs; 2021 box set for collectors. Extras : BowieNet archives (via davidbowie.com ); Omikron  gameplay on YouTube features the songs. If you’d like track deep-dives, tour details (the intimate hours Tour  of 1999–2000), or X reactions to this anniversary, let me know!

  • David Bowie: Thursday’s Child Single (1999)

David Bowie’s Thursday’s Child  is a single from his twenty-first studio album, ‘hours…’ , released on September 20, 1999, by Virgin Records. It marked a reflective, introspective phase in Bowie’s career, blending electronic, rock, and pop elements with a mature, contemplative tone. Background and Production Context : ‘hours…’  was Bowie’s first album not tied to a film or specific project since Black Tie White Noise  (1993). It emerged from his collaboration with guitarist Reeves Gabrels for the video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul , but evolved into a standalone project. The album explored themes of aging, regret, and hope, with Thursday’s Child  as its lead single. Recording : Recorded at Sear Sound in New York and overdubbed in London, produced by Bowie and Gabrels. The track features a lush arrangement with contributions from musicians like Mark Plati (bass) and Sterling Campbell (drums). Inspiration : The title draws from the traditional nursery rhyme “Monday’s Child,” where Thursday’s child “has far to go.” Bowie used this to reflect on life’s journey and personal growth, avoiding the darker implications of the phrase. Song Details Genre and Sound : A mid-tempo, melodic pop-rock ballad with electronic undertones. It features layered guitars, subtle synths, and a warm, soulful vibe, with Bowie’s emotive vocals at the forefront. Lyrics and Themes : The lyrics are nostalgic yet hopeful, touching on past struggles (“All of my life I’ve tried so hard”) and looking toward a brighter future (“Lucky old sun is in my sky”). It’s a love song with an introspective edge, possibly addressing Bowie’s relationship with his wife, Iman, or a broader reflection on redemption. Length : 5:24 (album version), with shorter radio edits (around 4:25). Release and Performance Single Release : Released as the lead single from ‘hours…’  in September 1999, with two versions: a radio edit and an extended “rock mix.” B-sides included tracks like “We All Go Through” and “No One Calls.” Chart Performance : Reached #16 in the UK Singles Chart but didn’t chart in the US Billboard Hot 100, though it gained airplay on alternative and adult contemporary radio. It performed better in Europe, particularly in Italy and Germany. Music Video : Directed by Walter Stern, the video shows a middle-aged Bowie and a younger version of himself (played by another actor) reflecting on life in a dreamlike, mirrored setting. It’s introspective and visually striking, emphasizing themes of self-reflection. Reception Critical Response : Critics praised Thursday’s Child  for its emotional depth and melodic strength, often citing it as a highlight of ‘hours…’ . Some noted its accessibility compared to Bowie’s experimental 90s work like Outside  or Earthling . However, a few found it too safe or sentimental compared to his edgier output. Fan Perspective : Fans on platforms like X appreciate its heartfelt tone and smooth production, with some calling it a hidden gem in Bowie’s later catalog. Others see it as pleasant but less impactful than his classic singles. Recent posts on X (as of 2025) highlight its nostalgic appeal for late-90s Bowie fans. Bowie’s View : Bowie described the song as optimistic, reflecting a shift from the “doom and gloom” of his earlier 90s work. He saw it as a personal milestone, capturing a sense of peace in his life. Cultural Impact and Legacy Album Context : Thursday’s Child  set the tone for ‘hours…’ , an album that bridged Bowie’s experimental 90s phase with the more straightforward rock of his later years ( Heathen , Reality ). It’s seen as a transitional work, showing Bowie grappling with mortality while embracing hope. Live Performances : Bowie performed the song during the Hours Tour  (1999), including notable TV appearances on Later… with Jools Holland  and Top of the Pops . Its live renditions were intimate, emphasizing the song’s emotional core. Modern Relevance : The song resonates with fans for its universal themes of reflection and renewal. It’s often cited in discussions of Bowie’s later career as a moment of vulnerability, contrasting his chameleon-like reinventions. Where to Access Streaming : Available on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and other platforms as part of ‘hours…’  or in single form. Physical Copies : Found on CD and vinyl reissues of ‘hours…’ , including the 2021 Brilliant Adventure  box set. Video : The official music video is on YouTube and Bowie’s official Vevo channel. Fun Facts Video Game Connection : The song and album were initially linked to Omikron: The Nomad Soul , where Bowie appeared as a virtual character. The game’s futuristic vibe influenced the track’s electronic elements. Collaborative Writing : Co-written with Reeves Gabrels, the song emerged from jam sessions, with its melody inspired by late-night studio experimentation. B-Sides : The single’s B-sides, like “We All Go Through,” are fan favorites, showcasing Bowie’s knack for crafting strong non-album tracks. Advertisement Dated October 4, 1999
