Elton John’s recording of Pinball Wizard was created for Ken Russell’s 1975 film adaptation of Tommy. The track was first issued in 1975 as a US promotional‑only single, and later released commercially in the UK in 1976, where it reached number seven. Because the US edition was not commercially available, it was ineligible for the Billboard Hot 100, though it did reach number nine on the US Radio & Records airplay chart.
John’s arrangement replaces the Who’s acoustic‑guitar foundation with piano as the central instrument. The film version includes additional lyrics written by Pete Townshend specifically for the movie, and incorporates subtle musical references to the Who’s earlier hit I Can’t Explain. Elton’s own band and producer Gus Dudgeon handled the recording, unlike most of the soundtrack which featured various combinations of the Who and session musicians. RECORDING
Recorded on 19 April 1974 at Ramport Studios, London, Elton’s version was produced by Gus Dudgeon using his regular touring and studio band. The recording predates the film’s release and was later incorporated into the Tommy soundtrack. A live extended jam from Elton’s 1975 Wembley Stadium performance was later issued on the 30th Anniversary edition of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
