Mud was a classic English glam rock band formed in February 1966 in Carshalton, Greater London. Known for their catchy, high-energy pop-rock anthems, flamboyant stage outfits, and fun-loving vibe, they became one of the biggest British singles acts of the mid-1970s glam era.

They scored 14 UK Top 20 hits between 1973 and 1976, including three No. 1 singles. Their sound mixed glam stomp with 1950s rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly influences.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Mud blended infectious hooks, cheeky lyrics, and colorful stage presence (platform boots, satin, and denim). They were chart rivals to Slade, Sweet, and Gary Glitter during glam’s peak. Later in their career, they leaned more into 1950s nostalgia with rockabilly-flavored tracks.

Les Gray left in 1978, and the original band eventually split in the early 1980s. Tragically, Les Gray passed away in 2004 and Dave Mount in 2006. Rob Davis (who later co-wrote Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”) and Ray Stiles revived Mud in 2015 with a new lineup, and they continue performing today.
