Slade (September 28, 1973) – Sladest Album Release UK

Sladest is a compilation album by Slade, released on 28 September 1973 by Polydor Records (2442 119). Produced by Chas Chandler, it was Slade’s first greatest‑hits collection, consolidating their chart‑topping singles from 1971–1973 and select album tracks. Released alongside the single “My Friend Stan” (2058 407), Sladest reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, confirming Slade’s peak popularity during the glam rock era.
In America, Sladest was released by Reprise with a significantly different track listing, reaching No. 129 on the Billboard 200. The UK LP was issued in the Polydor Deluxe series with a gatefold sleeve.

BACKGROUND
In 1973, Slade were one of Britain’s most successful bands, achieving two No. 1 singles — “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me” — both entering the charts at No. 1, a rare feat not achieved since The Beatles’ “Get Back” in 1969.
Following Don Powell’s near‑fatal car crash in July 1973, the band’s future was uncertain. While recording Old New Borrowed and Blue, Slade released Sladest to maintain momentum.
It topped the UK charts, earned UK Silver in its first week, UK Gold in November 1973, and remained on the charts for 24 weeks. It returned to No. 1 in January 1974 following the success of “Merry Xmas Everybody”.
