This historic festival became one of rock’s defining moments. John Lennon, still a member of The Beatles, appeared spontaneously with Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, and Yoko Ono as the Plastic Ono Band, performing live versions later released on Live Peace in Toronto 1969.
The Doors headlined the event, closing the 12‑hour show. Other performers included Chicago Transit Authority, Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent, Junior Walker and the All‑Stars, Tony Joe White, and Cat Mother and the All‑Night Newsboys.
The festival bridged generations — uniting early rock pioneers with the emerging counterculture — and marked Lennon’s first major solo performance, foreshadowing his departure from The Beatles.
