Pop star David Bowie told a stunned packed house: “This is my last show ever — there won’t be another.” In spite of screams of “No, no” from 3,000 fans, Bowie said his decision was made because he wanted to move into films and writing.

The shock decision meant the cancellation of a £500,000 American tour planned for September. This dramatic retirement came at the height of Ziggy Stardust mania during his hugely successful 1973 UK tour.
