THE STORY

Recorded between 1967 and 1968 at Olympic Studios and other London venues, Regimental Sgt. Zippo was intended to be Elton John’s debut album. Produced by Caleb Quaye, it features early songwriting collaborations with Bernie Taupin and Caleb Quaye. The project was ultimately shelved, and these recordings remained unreleased for over 50 years until this official mono vinyl release for Record Store Day 2021.

CONTEXT & NOTES

This album captures a young Elton John still developing his signature style — a fascinating mix of psychedelia, music hall, and early singer-songwriter material. It is historically significant as it predates his breakthrough album Empty Sky (1969). The 2021 release includes one previously unreleased track and eight alternate versions, presented in beautiful swinging mono.
