THE STORY 

Released on June 20, 1975, “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” / “House of Cards” was the lead single from the concept album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. The A-side recounts Elton’s 1968 crisis and the intervention by Long John Baldry (“Sugar Bear”), while the B-side is a non-album track. The single entered the UK chart shortly after release and became a major hit.

CONTEXT & NOTES 

The single reached No.22 on the UK Singles Chart and No.4 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It is certified Gold in the US and remains one of Elton’s most emotionally resonant songs. The release coincided with the album’s massive success, which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
