Suzi Quatro (born Susan Kay Quatro, June 3, 1950) is an American singer, bassist, songwriter, and actress. A pioneering female rock star, she rose to fame in the 1970s as one of the leading figures of glam rock. Known for her leather jumpsuits, powerful bass playing, and fiery stage presence, Suzi Quatro broke barriers as a woman fronting a hard-rocking band in a male-dominated industry.

EARLY LIFE & MUSICAL

BEGINNINGS Born in Detroit, Michigan, into a musical family, Suzi began playing drums and piano as a child. At age 14 she formed her first band, The Pleasure Seekers (later Cradle), with her sisters. The band toured extensively and even opened for The Who and MC5. In 1971, British producer Mickie Most discovered her in Detroit and brought her to England, where she launched her solo career.

GLAM ROCK STARDOM (1973–1978)

Suzi Quatro exploded onto the British and European charts with a string of hits produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, including:

  • “Can the Can” (1973) – UK No. 1

  • “48 Crash” (1973)

  • “Daytona Demon” (1973)

  • “Devil Gate Drive” (1974) – UK No. 1

  • “The Wild One” (1974)

  • “If You Can’t Give Me Love” (1978)

Her self-titled debut album (1973) and follow-up Quatro (1974) established her as the ultimate leather-clad rock ‘n’ roll woman. She was one of the first female artists to play bass as the frontwoman of a hard rock band, inspiring generations of female musicians.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS & ACTING

While most successful in the UK, Europe, and Australia, Suzi also broke into the American market with the 1978 duet “Stumblin’ In” with Chris Norman (UK No. 4, US No. 4). She appeared in the musical Annie Get Your Gun on London’s West End and had acting roles in shows like Happy Days (as Leather Tuscadero) and Minder.

LATER CAREER

Suzi Quatro has continued recording and touring into her 70s. She released acclaimed albums such as Back to the Drive (2006) and No Control (2019), and remains a respected figure in rock music. She has also hosted radio shows and written an autobiography.

LEGACY

Suzi Quatro is widely regarded as a trailblazer for women in rock. She proved that a woman could front a hard-rock band, play bass, wear leather, and command the stage with authority. Her influence can be seen in artists such as Joan Jett, The Runaways, Girlschool, and many modern female rockers.
