"One Night" was originally written by Dave Bartholomew and Pearl King and first recorded by Smiley Lewis in 1956 as "One Night of Sin". The song later gained major commercial success when Elvis Presley recorded a revised‑lyric version in 1958, adding Anita Steiman as co‑writer. Mud’s 1975 recording follows the Presley arrangement rather than the original Smiley Lewis lyric, aligning with their mid‑Seventies glam‑pop style under the RAK/Chinnichap umbrella

RECORDING

Recorded and released during Mud’s peak chart period, "One Night" was issued on RAK in July 1975.

The band’s version leans into their trademark stomp‑and‑chorus production style, pairing 1950s rock ’n’ roll roots with Seventies glam polish. Both sides were produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn.

STYLE & THEMES

A glam‑rock reinterpretation of a 1950s R&B classic. Mud’s version emphasises upbeat rhythm, hand‑claps, and a bright, radio‑ready sheen typical of their mid‑Seventies output. The B‑side continues Mud’s fascination with 1950s rock ’n’ roll staples.

TRACK‑BY‑TRACK NOTES

One Night — Written by Bartholomew and King; produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Glam‑styled cover of the Presley arrangement; charted modestly in the UK.

Shake Rattle And Roll / See You Later Alligator — Written by Calhoun and Guidry; produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn.

A medley of two rock ’n’ roll standards, continuing Mud’s retro‑leaning B‑side tradition.
