A Day At The Races, Queen's fifth studio album, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026 with a Queen Store exclusive picture disc edition.

Originally released on December 10, 1976, the album marked an important stage in Queen's development as the band's first self-produced studio album. Engineered by Mike Stone, it went on to become one of Queen's most acclaimed releases, reaching No. 1 in the UK and No. 5 in the United States.

The album produced several enduring Queen favourites. Somebody To Love, released three weeks before the album, became one of the band's best-known songs, distinguished by its complex layers of vocals inspired by a gospel choir arrangement. Brian May's Tie Your Mother Down subsequently developed into a firm favourite in Queen's live performances.

STYLE & THEMES

A Day At The Races demonstrates the breadth of Queen's musical approach, moving from the layered vocal arrangements of Somebody To Love and the rock-driven Tie Your Mother Down to the Vaudeville-influenced Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy.

The album also includes the 12-string-driven Long Away, which was released as a single in the United States and New Zealand, and Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together), released as a single in Japan and partly sung in Japanese as a dedication to Queen's fans there.

The continued reputation of the album rests on both its carefully constructed songwriting and its ambitious studio creativity, particularly on recordings such as Somebody To Love and The Millionaire Waltz.
